Reckless Dove Closed Out Day of Play on the Pier

Reckless Dove played a bonus Friday set at Port Angeles' Day of Play Festival - a sparse, easy crowd and exactly the wind-down the week needed.

Day of Play is usually a daytime thing - a full Saturday of activities around town. This year it stretched into the evening with a bonus set on the pier, a break from the regular Wednesday concert schedule, and Reckless Dove got the slot.

Reckless Dove is a Sequim-based rock band - Bee Smith on lead vocals, Brandino Gibson on lead guitar, Craig Jaeger on rhythm guitar, and Craiger Robinson on drums. Craiger's also an artist, and he designed their stickers - worth grabbing if you see them. Their set pulls from a wide stretch of decades - 60s and 70s classics, 90s rock, funk, a few originals mixed in - and they make it all feel connected, like it was always supposed to live in the same playlist.

Bee wore red, and she was magnificent. Full commitment the whole set, working the mic like the crowd owed her nothing and she was going to earn it anyway.

The crowd was small. A Saturday evening bonus show doesn't pull the way a regular Wednesday does, and that was fine - better than fine, honestly. A few people got up and danced. One older gentleman off to the side had clearly decided the music was his alone, moving through his own private choreography and not bothered in the slightest who noticed. A pack of kids claimed the open space in front of the stage the whole set - flipping, cartwheeling, running a round of ring-around-the-rosie with the kind of full-body commitment that puts most adults to shame. No photos of them here, but they were half the atmosphere.

The weather cooperated completely - warm, clear, that late-July light that makes everything on the water look a little better than it has any right to. After a long week, a small crowd and a good band on the pier was exactly the right amount of evening.
