Great American Trainwreck Lit Up the Pier in Red

Great American Trainwreck brought Seattle bluegrass-Americana to Concerts at the Pier in Port Angeles - five players, sharp harmonies, and a lead singer who owned the stage in red.

A quick note before this one - recap posts have been slower to go up than usual. It's been a busy stretch of shoots and processing paid client work, and blog write-ups got pushed down the list. Catching up now.

August 5th opened up clear and warm on the pier, the kind of early-August evening the Peninsula doesn't always deliver but earns extra credit for when it does.

Great American Trainwreck is a five-piece out of Seattle, formed in 2017, playing a high-energy blend of bluegrass, classic country, and southern rock with a progressive edge - melodic, harmony-heavy, more grit than polish. Stephanie Ward fronts the band on vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by Andy Basinger on keys, Dan Rogers on bass, Dave Bush on drums, and Nick Nordus on lead guitar. They released their third album, Red Deer, in 2023, and the band's name traces back to a song by 1100 Springs that caught their guitarist's ear years before the group existed.

Stephanie was the one to watch all night - a red dress against the stage lights, impossible to lose track of even when the rest of the band was trading solos. It's the kind of detail that makes a set stick in memory after the fact.

Harmonies carried the set as much as any single instrument did - five players who've clearly logged a lot of stage time together, trading lines back and forth without missing a cue.
